The £5 million improvement scheme at Chelmsford station, which is transforming passenger facilities at Greater Anglia’s busiest two-platform station, is nearing completion.

A bright, modern and spacious ticket office, which features five accessible, open plan service windows and a glazed roof, opened this week.

Set back from its original location, the new, larger ticket office includes a purpose-built lobby which incorporates a new queuing system to ensure that customers are served promptly.

The main entrance is now open and new ticket barriers have been installed, as well as nine new self-service ticket machines which are in a dedicated area to improve access and reduce congestion.

Funded through the National Stations Improvement Programme (NSIP) backed by the Department for Transport, and the Network Rail Development Fund, the improvements at Chelmsford have also included a new station frontage, construction of a new stair tower to the London-bound platform and better retail facilities, including a new Costa Coffee shop.

Simi Timubu, Greater Anglia’s Area Customer Service Manager for Chelmsford said: “The redevelopment work has transformed Chelmsford station, creating a more spacious, modern and welcoming environment and improved customer service facilities. We are very grateful for the co-operation of our customers throughout the duration of this project and would like to thank them for their patience while this investment work was carried out.”
