Children from north Essex enjoyed a seaside special train ride to the beach as they boarded the inaugural bucket and spade train from Colchester.

Organised by Essex and South Suffolk Community Rail Partnership, the Abellio Greater Anglia service was decked with a seaside theme.

Hordes of beach-bound families boarded the train, which was a first of its kind to run, on Wednesday 6 August. The fully decorated train pulled into Colchester station ready to depart for Walton-on-the-Naze at 9.56am.

Children were given a bucket and spade activity pack which kept them busy throughout the journey while adults took part in a brain teasing quiz about the county.

Jayne Sumner, Rail Engagement Manager at Essex County Council, said: “The event was so successful and we will definitely repeat it next year. We would like to thank everyone who helped to make the event a success and we look forward to running more special event trains this year.”
