Greater Anglia is advertising 15 full-time trainee driver roles across its network, as it looks for its latest crop of new recruits.

Positions are available for both depot drivers, who are responsible for driving empty trains around depots and sidings and into station platforms at low speed, and mainline drivers who will be operating trains in passenger service on a number of routes.

The jobs are all safety-critical roles and require a person who can work well on their own, effectively communicate with both colleagues and customers, be well organised and have high levels of concentration. They are suitable for anyone with the right attributes.

All positions involve shift work, which includes weekends, bank holidays and nights, on a rotating pattern.

Successful candidates will be given in-depth training by Greater Anglia on everything needed to be competent in the role, including classroom and simulator-based learning, along with practical handling of how to drive, under the watchful eye of a driver instructor.

Jay Thompson, Greater Anglia’s Train Service Delivery Director, said:

“We run more than 1,000 services a day across our network, which range from suburban services to mainline intercity services to branch line services, all with some of the most modern trains in the UK.

“Being a driver is a great job to have with a real emphasis on safety and delivering an excellent, punctual service for our customers.

“If you feel like this may be the job for you, then Greater Anglia would love to see your application.”

Charlotte Geddes, a trainee Mainline Driver at Norwich said:

“I absolutely love my job. I am proud of myself for coming this far. I've got two sons and I love showing them that mum’s done it. I would encourage any man or woman to join the railway.”

Positions for five trainee depot drivers are available at Clacton, Colchester, Ilford, Norwich and Southend Victoria.

The ten trainee mainline drivers roles are available at Bishop’s Stortford, Cambridge, Clacton, Colchester, Ilford, Ipswich, Liverpool Street, Norwich and Southend Victoria.

Greater Anglia has made a video featuring interviews with a depot driver, a trainee mainline driver, and a mainline driver to lift the lid on their roles from their perspective.

You can apply through the careers page on the company’s website.

Vacancies are planned to close on Friday, 19 April, but may close sooner due to a high influx of applications.
